I believe, Communication skills with professionalism is a core competency in the medical coding & billing field. Professional communication is a reflection of integrity and self-efficacy.
There are key five key Communication skils- Verbal, NonVerbal, Written, Listening and Engagement with diverse populations.
I have effectively demonstrated these key communicaiton skill across my professional and student life. Here are key highlights..
Verbal - This is a most essential skill for interaction either face-to-face or remote. So, I always use professional language without hurting anybody's feeling to deliver my message and also making sure to maintain my volume & pitch. I strongly believe that with positive attitude & professional communication, one can make huge difference and influence the listeners.
I work as a paraprofessional and in this profession I meet many different kinds of people and different levels of students . My communication skills helps to build a strong understading bond with my co-workers and students.
NonVerbal - Body language and gesture gives great insights into speaker's mind. Sarcasm, complacency, deception or genuineness occur within nonverbal communication. Eye contact is the most important part of nonverbal communication which shows the self confidence in the words used during verbal communication as well as builds the trust and truthfulness in the conversation.
Listening - Listening is my key strength in communication skills. I feel when we want to communicate with sombody and want to leave a positive imapct then you must listen to others. This helps to build the meaningful conversation. This is a key skill for everyone to demonstrate in their daily life. Whenever I communicate with my own kids, first thing I do is to listen to them before sharing my thoughts which makes them happy and also helps me to understand their point-of-view and allow me convey my message in the right words and expressions! I use the same strategy at my workplace or college campus which helps me to build stronger friendships.
Written - I think writing skills are crucial for business correspondence as well as very important to convey the write messages to your readers. Text should written in structured with zero grammatical errors. With good writing skills it is easy to prove your credibility in workplace and easy to increase the circle of influence.
At my workplace or in my daily life we use very little writing skills. When I started taking Medical Coding Specialist classes, I had lot of opportunity to reflect on my writing skills. I made some key rules sych as highlighting the key information from collected materials, keep the subject material short but make sure my thoughts are well conveyed and proofread multiple times before submissions. This helped me to increase the focus on writing skills.
Engagement with diverse populations - Today's increased globalization has enabled culturally diverse work force contributing more in company's bottom line. I think, it's very important to understand how people communicate, share their ideas and thoughts which are very much inline with their cultural background. I believe in keeping the communication very clean, concise ans straightforward. I always avoid any jargons, slangs and specific expressions.
At work place and in college campus, I meet lot of people who are from different countries, different cultural background and different age groups. Myself carry a baggage of diversity, I brought up in different country and cultural background. I understand how imprtant it is to respect and understand everybody's perspective to have a good communication.
